Safety, Health, Environment The CSL Group SHE manual has been entrenched in all subsidiaries since January 2008, together with the Groups basic compliance requirements. These include the Primary Safety Rules and Three Minute Risk Assessments which now form the minimum standards for all subsidiaries. Most companies in the Group improved on their previous years SHE performance with a definite decrease in the number of incidents occurring as well as the severity of these incidences when compared to the previous year. The Group achieved its Targets set on SHE performance requirements, i.e. TRIR target 1.00 achieved 0.99 LTIR target 0.50 achieved 0.43 Unfortunately the Group has suffered a fatality, which occurred under SAPC at the SAPPI Stanger plant where a labour hire employee entered into a vessel without authorisation. The employee died inside the vessel, as a result of asphyxiation. Most other incidents occurred during the handling of equipment, containers and the loading of vehicles where cuts and falls were reported. Spillages of chemicals resulting in chemical burns have decreased compared to previous years. Transportation incidents, although not high, still remain a high risk due to the increased traffic congestion and poor condition of national roads. Contractor incidents occurring in the Group reduced during the last quarter of the year. However, a contractor employee unfortunately died following a fall from a platform during the construction phase of a building at one of the sites. The contractor was in the process of installing suspended ceilings and stepped off the 3.6m floor level, falling to the ground floor. SHE Management Systems: The introduction of Mini Risk Assessments, Primary Safety Rules and reviewing of Job Procedures to incorporate Safety Measures required before performing the required tasks, has refocused the emphasis on safety on the operational floor. This has also been implemented with contractors. An external service provider has been contracted to perform all SHE training courses for the CSL Group. This process of standardised SHE training throughout the Group ensures that specific skill and knowledge applicable to the Chemical Services Group is transferred to all employees. Responsible Care: Eleven of the companies have been successfully verified by third parties on compliance with Responsible Care requirements as managed by the Chemical and Allied Industries Association. Conformance to SHE Standards: In addition to the bi-annual review of risks identified by the various subsidiaries, senior management from CSL undertake a Visible Felt Leadership (VFL) audit at each of the operations and review with the relevant Managing Director the SHE management system in place to ensure compliance with all aspects. Environmental Performance Electricity usage showed a substantial decrease as compared to 2007. This was mainly due to load shedding schedules which affected certain operations in the first six months of the year, and some companies having planned outages for maintenance purposes during this period as well. However, on a unit base per ton, the Group has showed an improvement in efficiency of electrical power. This is the main contributor to the reduction in kWh usage. Companies have become more aware of energy savings, resulting in them switching out non-essential requirements. Gas consumption has decreased in relation to the decrease in total production; however efficiency of use has improved driven by the higher cost of gas per GJ. Hazardous waste generated increased by 42%, mainly due to Chemical Initiatives and Chemserve Systems. Chemical Initiatives removed some additional 495 tons of sulphur contaminated products in the form of filter cakes or solutions mainly from clean up operations during a planned outage for maintenance purposes. Chemserve Systems removed waste products from the Chemserve Park site in Chloorkop. 12 715 tons of CO2 was emitted to the atmosphere compared to 13 448 for 2007, with 1 146 tons SO2 emitted compared to 1 161 tons. A slight improvement in efficiency was achieved in gas burning equipment and emission control equipment. Click Next to continue. |
